Colorectal Cancer Early Detection and Prevention
Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths, yet it is preventable and treatable when detected early, by understanding risk factors, promoting regular screening, and leveraging innovative detection methods, we can reduce the burden of this disease.
Risk Factors for Colorectal Cancer
Several lifestyle and genetic factors contribute to colorectal cancer, including:
- Diet: High intake of processed meats, low intake of fruits and vegetables
- Sedentary Lifestyle: inactivity and obesity
- Substance Use: Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption
- Family History: A family history of colorectal cancer or genetic predisposition
The Importance of Early Detection
Colorectal cancer is often diagnosed at advanced stages when treatment is more challenging. However, with early detection and preventive measures, the incidence and mortality rates can be significantly reduced.
Why Early Screening Saves lives in the UAE?
Rising Incidence: Colorectal cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Abu Dhabi, unlike other countries with high Human Development Index (HDI) where it ranks second.
Low Screening Rates: Less than 10% of eligible individuals have undergone colorectal cancer screening.
Late-Stage Diagnosis: Currently, less than 1 in 3 cases are diagnosed in early stages, leading to higher treatment costs and lower survival rates for the population.
Standard Screening Options
Colonoscopy:
Liquid biopsy is an FDA-approved simple, non-invasive blood test that aids in the early detection of colorectal cancer. While it does not replace colonoscopy, which remains the gold standard, liquid biopsy offers a convenient option for individuals unwilling to undergo traditional methods of screening. This enhances Abu Dhabi’s efforts for early cancer detection.
FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test):
A non-invasive stool test that detects hidden blood but requires regular screening, once yearly.
Liquid Biopsy:
The Shield Test Simple Blood Test for early detection of Colorectal Cancer.
New Screening Options Can Change This
The introduction of liquid biopsy provides a convenient and non-invasive alternative to colonoscopy and Fecal Immuno-chemical Test (FIT), aiming to improve screening adherence and detect cancer earlier.
Liquid Biopsy: A New Screening Tool
What is a Liquid Biopsy Test?
Liquid biopsy is an FDA-approved simple, non-invasive blood test that aids in the early detection of colorectal cancer. While it does not replace colonoscopy, which remains the gold standard, liquid biopsy offers a convenient option for individuals unwilling to undergo traditional methods of screening. This enhances Abu Dhabi’s efforts for early cancer detection.
Eligibility Criteria
Individuals above 40 years
Eligible:
- Un- welling to have colonoscopy or FIT test.
Exclusions:
- Personal history of colorectal cancer.
- Known hereditary/genetic risk (e.g. Lynch syndrome, Familial Adenomatous Polyposis).
- Diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease.
Convenience: Non-invasive, requiring only a blood sample
Accessibility: Suitable for those refusing colonoscopy or FIT tests
Early Detection: Enables timely intervention and treatment
Benefits for the Community
Early detection reduces cancer mortality rates, prevents advanced cancer treatments, and strengthens Abu Dhabi’s position as a leader in innovative healthcare solutions.
Where to Access the Test?
The liquid biopsy test is part of the IFHAS program and is available at Ambulatory Health Services, clinics and hospitals across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra which offer the Comprehensive Screening Program (IFHAS). Book your appointment through IFHAS providers or via the Sahatna Application
