15 smoking cessation approved clinics are available in the emirate to help smokers quit smoking in which by booking an appointment with a specialized doctor to decide the perfect treatment and monitoring plan.
Abu Dhabi Public Health Center launches the Tobacco Control Awareness Program with the slogan “Together Towards a Tobacco-Free Abu Dhabi” in coinciding with the World No Tobacco Day on the 31st of May. The program aims to raise awareness among the community on the electronic cigarette’s usage associated with health complications such as Popcorn Lung Disease and EVALI.
Popcorn lung disease & EVALI are a serious lung diseases that can be caused by e- cigarette’s smoking, While popcorn lung disease is rare, it can be debilitating and even fatal in some cases. Symptoms can include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and other respiratory issues. While EVALI, is another serious lung disease that has been linked to vaping. In 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified an outbreak of EVALI cases with symptoms that included coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, fatigue, and more.
Through the launch of the tobacco control program, Abu Dhabi Public Health Center is committed to educate the public about the health risks of smoking and vaping and address the misperceptions about vaping amongst young people and their parents, as well as promoting healthier alternatives and encouraging smokers and vapers to quit.
On the occasion Dr Mariam Al Wahedi, Director of the Community Health Department at Abu Dhabi Public Health Center said:” This year’s Tobacco Control Awareness Program is focused on increasing awareness about the lung diseases caused in relation to e- smoking and vaping. As the centre aim toward a no smoking environment with purpose of saving lives and improve public health and work against smoking misconceptions to encourage healthy living.”
